Open Source Software, where?????

I am totally new to the idea of open source software. I have one instant opinion: If it ain't Microsoft I think I love it!
I am using OO and will be reading these forums.

I am interested to know where one would look for other discussion forums or sources for open source software in general, to include utility programs, graphics or cad programs, etc. Obviously not OO, but somewhat from the same community, I suspect.

Any pointers as to where to look would be appreciated. (Yes, I know _'ing google it, but I think that is not sufficient, or is at least the hard way.)

TIA

Pretty much any Linux forum will also have loads of info and chatter about open source stuff.

A couple examples...

Just one option. You might want to do a search on "open source equivalent" to see what "replaces" what.

I have a very long list of free software grouped by sector here:

These pages are in Italian language, but you can translate it with google:

One other thing to consider, make sure you check what operating systems an open source application is available for. If you are using MS Windows there a a couple of open source applications not ported to it...
