If it does, how do I use it?

I am novice to OpenOffice.

Please help.

Tools > Language > Thesaurus

My impression is that not all languages that OOo supports have a thesaurus, and of those that do, not all have one that's very complete.

Hi,
for German UI: Extras > Sprache > Thesaurus
or
Ctrl +F7

The Thesaurus functionality has been reworked for OOo 3.3 (not integrated yet),
see →
Software Specification Document – OpenOffice.org - Thesaurus
<http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/lin ... saurus.odt>

E.g.:
The context menu for text without spelling or grammar issues shows a Synonyms entry.

Do you have a thesaurus installed?
If so is it active?
Does it match the language of the document?

Take a look in tools>options>language settings>writing aids
Under writing aids is thesaurus ticked?
if no, tick it then, or if yes, click edit
Pick the language you are using and check that the thesaurus is ticked here too (if not tick it)

If you can't get the ticks to stick, chances are you don't have a thesaurus - many of the dictionary extensions contain a thesaurus but not all do - English (various variations eg US GB AU) do, so does the German one, Swahili does not but beyond that I have no idea which do or don't.

In the menus on the first line (File, Edit, ...) there is a Tools one. At bottom of it, there is an Options entry. Then in the sections about language, the second sub-section is Writing Aids. Even that English path should help, there are not that many possibilities.

Or install the English language pack to get the English GUI.

Hi,

That's planned for OpenOffice.org 3.3
There isn't a Synonyms entry in the context menu of OpenOffice.org 3.1 or 3.2 (and before).

There is no context menu in the last screenshots above. The menu is from Tools>Language>Thesaurus (Extras>Sprache>Thesaurus).

First screenshots seems to be indeed with a developer snapshot of 3.3.
Edit: First screnshot with context menu is indeed taken from the specification linked just above the pic.

"Target is OOo 3.3."
[Wanna fool me?]

Hagar, thanks a lot for your creative processing of my screenshots ... ;)

hi,

what is Dev. Snapshot? It is not RC..And what is the difference to the RC versions and the released versions?

The dev snapshot is a version provided as it is with the latest changes, hence not stable at all. The RC is an almost stable version that is proposed to the users/testers to check there is no issue. Once there is enough feedback to confirm there is no problem, the latest RC is labeled as the final version.
