Inserting text without over writing text

Hello,
I am trying to format a document and don't know what to adjust to get Writer to work.
It was allowing me to just highlight a word and replace it, but I suppose after copying and
pasting something from an email , it suddenly changed.
Now if i were to high light a word and make changes, the amount of space for
text characters has decreased, and I am now overlapping and changing the next
word after rather than the one that I had originally ment to edit.
Halp!

You may have hit the Insert key by mistake. Hit it again.

huh?!
nope that does not solve my problem, ummmm... so as I go back and add text into
the document by just clicking the mouse and typing in more characters, the document
does not add more character spacing to allow more characters to be inserted. Instead,
it will start to overlap characters and unless I remember what was next, I will have to retype
the whole paragraph to keep up with the changes.

What font are you using? In the middle box of the bottom bar of your main Writer screen is Insert shown?

I think Villeroy has this right.
The Insert key toggles between insert mode and overwrite mode. Put your cursor in the middle of a word. If the flashing cursor contains a letter then you are in overwrite mode. Press Insert once to return to insert mode where the flashing cursor will not contain a letter.

You also change it by clicking the switch in the status bar bottom of your window:

Thanks to add '[Solved]' at beginning of your
first post title (
edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

Wow Villeroy!! This has bugged me for years. Thank you for the great solution!
I think the "insert" key is so close to the "delete" key and that would explain why I may have accidentally hit it.
