Print Envelopes in OpenOffice.org Writer - Video Tutorial

I featured how to print Envelopes in OpenOffice.org on Category5 Technology TV last week, and wanted to share the recording with the community here at OOo, in case anyone wants help with this very topic.

The video covers basic "one-off" envelope printing, as well as setting up a spreadsheet database (compatible with OOo Calc or Excel!) and letting OOo Writer automatically print your envelopes based on selected fields in your spreadsheet.

The video tutorial can be found on YouTube here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=zpXItKsPw3o

Hope you enjoy the tutorial, and please by all means vote and comment on the YouTube site. I'd also love you to check out our show (which persistently promotes OpenOffice.org to its viewers) at http://www.Category5.tv

Thanks & all the best from Category5 TV!

Can't wait to get home so I can check it out. YouTube is blocked by our corporate network, which is occasionally unfortunate, as it does have some legitimate business uses such as this. I'll have to remember to come back and find the link. :)

Hey Fox,
That's a legitimate issue (YouTube being blocked by corporate network) that I didn't take into account.

In case you cannot view the feature on YouTube, please feel free to watch it via our own web site at http://www.category5.tv/content/blogcategory/5/10/ (look for the feature titled "Printing Envelopes in OpenOffice.org Writer (From Episode 20)".

I prefer people to visit YouTube if possible, only because then they can vote and comment on the video; but as a fallback (if your network blocks it), feel free to view it directly on our site.

All the best, and please let me know if it helps you out.

Robbie

I had thought to try there, but .tv domains are also blocked.

It's a very well done tutorial.

I guess the only thing I'd want to clarify is that when you choose Printer Settings instead of the Print dialog to select your paper size, those settings are stored in the document and will always show up by default in the Print dialog. This confuses people sometimes because they believe they're changing those settings when they do so through the Print dialog, when in fact that's just a one-off override of the Printer Settings options.

I was impressed with how you manage to do the camera work and computer work at the same time... zooming in while you're typing and such. How do you manage that?!? 8-)

Wow. You're on lock-down buddy! :) That'd be annoying, albeit probably cuts down on people spending too much time doing things other than work :)

Well, our show is a live broadcast; so if I miss any little things, it's not a huge big deal (as long as it's not something embarrassingly obvious). :) I'm sure people will figure out the printer dialogue thing easily. Thanks for the note, though. Perhaps I'll add that comment to the show notes on our site.

For zooming / etc. I use compiz-fusion. I run the show live myself, so from switching video sources, etc. it's all done on the fly. I use synergy to allow me to control several computers from one mouse/keyboard. Camera controls are done through ManyCam. I'm also a bit of a mad-man when it comes to understanding and controlling technology ;)

And of course, the YouTube version is slightly "edited down" from the live broadcast, simply to keep it from breaching the 10-minute YouTube limit.

All the best!!
Robbie
