Can't install dictionaries

I have been trying really hard to install a dictionary on Open office writer but when I try to use the wizard to "retrieve List" it tells me that I am not connected to the internet but I definitely am. If I try downloading the file to do off line install the wizard tells me that it doesn't recognize the file.
I have been following the instructions exactly and have spent hours online trying to get this working but am making no progress. Now I am trying to reinstall openoffice but am on the verge of just going out and buying MS word so I can just get to work and stop wasting time! HELP

As a workaround, you can install the dictionaries manually, see the post about deleting the unnecessary dics in the tutorial (I guess you referred to that thread).
