Your girlfrien document has any Header or footer?
Try open document with only texts, select all text. Check Tools>word count number of words will be same.
If open documents with headers and footers, select all text. word count -- will be difference between selected text and summ of all words.

Put another way, Select All does not actually select headers, footers, footnotes or frames.

Download, this file:
http://dba.openoffice.org/specification ... signer.odt
I counted words: selected section: 10806, whole document: 10976
If you find in your OOo different numbers, install new OOo your 2.0.4 pretty old. May it has some bugs on word count.
I tried on 2.3.0 and OOHm6(2.4 development) and get similar results.
