So it seems you got as far as doing a search, and therefore must have found the solution if you read those threads.

It is obvious that you have not found a solution. What is not obvious is whether or not you have read the threads that you found. There is little point in repeating what is already in the
Spellcheck Tutorial if you haven't read it yet.
If you cannot read the solved threads and provide further information, then we cannot help. Those solved threads tell you how to solve most common problems with spellcheck. If you have tried those solutions and still not solved your problem we need to know more. What have you tried? All you say is:
I have tried numerous things in help but nothing has worked.
Which could mean almost anything.
1. What language is the current text using? Edit paragraph style, Font, Language.

Please help the people here help you by giving as much information as you can about your settings and about what you have already done. We're all volunteers, remember?

In 2 years I've spent on forums, you would be the first one to give up on spell check!
Do you see a V checkmark? No: run the wizard to install the missing dictionary. Yes : what's the language in the paragraph style
Font tab?

I do remember another thread started by someone who had problems with Australian English. And Canadian English seems to be good for trouble too. Maybe somebody can make a tutorial for those problems?

While I would agree that some of the responses to your question were more terse than necessary, it is also the case that you have not yet given us enough information to help you. Saying "it doesn't work" doesn't tell us what solutions you tried or what you found when you tried them.
So, if you're will to have another go at it, let's try again. I would like you to check all the dialogs that set language in OOo. Please tell us what the language is set to in each dialog, and whether or not there is a check mark with ABC above it:
1. Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages.
2. Select a paragraph in the document. With the Styles and formatting palette open, and set to paragraph styles, right click on the paragraph style used in the selected paragraph. Choose Modify, then click on the Font Tab, and report the language setting there.
3. Select a some text (less than a paragraph) in the document. With the Styles and formatting palette open, and set to character styles, right click on the character tyle used in the text you selected. Choose Modify, then click on the Font Tab, and report the language setting there.
4. With some text selected, go to Format>Character..., click on the Font Tab and report the language setting there.
One more thing to check: Tools>Options>Language Settings>Writing Aids. Under Options, make sure that "check in all languages" is not checked.
