Comments/Notes compatibility

Post by herbertjoei »

Hi,

I'm a very new user to OO and my first problem is this:

1. Client sends me Word file with comments
2. I can see the comments in OO as yellow boxes and edits them
3. Save as .doc file
4. Client opens .doc file in Word and finds out the document wher comments was made has brackets instead of highlight and the comments originally made were missing

Is there a way to make sure the comments from the original word file still shows up after being edited in OO? or i'm doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Hi, herbertjoei! Welcome to the forum!

Have you searched the forum yet? I'll go ahead and do that, but meanwhile would like you to please read the Survival Guide (see the link in my signature) and provide all the version details requested there.

The highlighting problem is simply a difference in how Writer and Word treat highlights. Not everything is compatible from Word to Writer and Writer to Word, so you might need to consider workarounds, such as using the text background option in Word (although in the 2.4 beta of Writer, the highlighter pen in Word works properly too) to retain text highlights. I had no problem adding comments in Writer to the existing comments from Word, and having them show up in Word. You might want to give more detail as to exactly how those items are being added in Word and exactly how you're adding to the notes in Writer.

I've also seen some issues dealing with the non printing characters being hidden sometimes in MS Word IIRC.

The Notes/Comments feature is still not so robust, many users just wait for that improvement: Notes 2 (Google Summer of Code 2007).
LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7 Gigi) and 25.2 portable on Windows 11.
