Hello,
I have 2 problems. One is the Writer, combined with pl keyboard layout only gives me some Polish characters, like łó but not żśń, I just get empty spaces. This is Writer specific problem, as you can see that it worked fine here and it works fine in Abiword.

2nd question. Dictionaries. I have downloaded English Australia and Polish dictionaries and put them in the usr/share/myspell directory which worked for Abiword, but is not working for Writer. When I switch the language to those, the spell check does not engage as in says, spell check finished, when the document is clearly full of errors.

Because of the issues with zenwalks netpkg, I have installed OO by downloading the package from a mirror server and opening it in thunar. The wizards are non-operational as JRE is apparently not engaged on my computer. What do I do?

I'm running the latest Zenwalk on Pentium III Toshiba Satellite Pro, 128 RAM. I will have another 128 ram soon.

More likely to be a font specific problem. Those characters display fine for me in OpenOffice. Try a different font.

Make sure that the current document text (paragraph style) is set to Polish language. This is a very common error. Right-click, edit paragraph style, Font, Language. If it is set to [none] then that is the cause of the error.

For the accents, I've seen some threads about such issue IIRC. Have you searched the forum (try with the 'accent' keyword)?

Thanks, I didn't search for accents, I searched for Polish fonts. I stand corrected. Thanks for the tips I'm gonna go and try them now.

Enable Java, of course. (Sorry, couldn't help it). In the Java dialog box you have to check the Use Java checkbox and when it lists the available JREs, you also have to select one of them (click the small circle to the left of one of them).

Where is that? It is not too obvious if you're new to OpenOffice that you have to go to Tools, Options, Java to find that option. I have six versions, which one should I use? The oldest was selected, so I picked the newest at the top of the list.

Thank you for directing me to Tools>Options>Java using Java box is ticked, but the box is empty. I have no jre listed there. It looks I have to download myself one from one of the zenwalk mirrors. Brrr.... always issues...
But tell me this, isn't there a way around it, if it doesn't work, as in downloading font files manually and putting them in the right directories? I have just one font now that works with the PL characters, and that's courier. Bitstream Charter, which is what I use primarily these days doesn't on OO but does on Abiword.

I'm still getting nowhere with Spellcheck. I opened a new document, I selected default language for it as Polish. I went and left click on the paragraph, did the edit paragraph style thing to Polish, and the spell check said complete although I made a few intentional errors in the sentence. Hmmm

Have you read the tutorial? Do you see a V checkmark before the language? What's the language set in the Font tab of the paragraph style?

Yes, I read the tutorial. The font tab on paragraph style, I chose the language to Polish. However, there is no tick.
I went and created an en-AU and pl-PL directories in the usr/lib/openofficeetcetera directory next to en-US, but OO wasn't fooled by this low-tech approach. I guess I have to get JRE working and use the wizards. This may take a while... I will let you know how it all panned out.

If you are sure that you have Java on your computer, then your OOo installation may be corrupt. There are several threads in the old OOo forum about that problem.

If no tick before any language on selection list that means that language spell checker dictionaries files not installed. Install
File>Wizards>Install new dictionaries.... will open DicOOo select Englis(australia)an Polish with CTRL+click.

I have downloaded an installed jre from a zenwalk linux mirror. OO sees it now as Sun Mircrosystems 6 something. However, the unhappy faces next to wizards stay the same, but the wizards are working, all except the ones I want which is dictionaries and fonts. When I click those two nothing happens, there is not hard disk activity, nothing. I guess I'll have to read up on the jre corruption.

Do you have DicOOo.sxw on your computer? On Windows systems it'll be in the OpenOffice x.x/share/dict/ooo folder. When I disable Java that file still loads. It just won't work with Java disabled.

Can you open them? If not, download it (again, see the tutorial). Else, make sure you hit the CTRL key when clicking the link going to the language for installation.

I tried a different java package jdk, but it makes no difference. The add dictionaries and font wizards are as dead as a dodo, despite fax letter and others coming to life.
I wander if there is some co-dependency that I'm not aware of. That there maybe something else I need to download for OO to work properly. I downloaded OO from a zenwalk mirror manually to get around the issues I have been having with netpkg - the automatic update and download program for this version of linux. Hmmm.

No I have not. Could you possibly give me the link? Searching for it by myself, I didn't find anything I could download. I'm sorry. I know it must be frustrating for you.
Forgive me a newbe question, but if the md5sum for the file checks out then is there still possibility that the oo installation is suspect? What are your thoughts on the matter, Hagar? Wouldn't it give more problems overall?

For the md5sum, if it's correct, then issues that could appear would be link to the installation process and your configuration (don't know much about Zenwalk) but you would be sure that the download is definitively good.

I isntalled dictionaried by downloading the package and disabling the macro security to make it work. I have a question, I searched already, couldn't see one. Is there a .sxw document somewhere that would do the same for downloading fonts (my other dead wizard)?
