Loss of formatting in headers

I'm a newbie so be gentle...

When formatting headers and footers (borders or backgrounds) in my .doc files, I lose the formatting when I close the file and reopen. Is this an issue when not using the standard Writer file format?

Very likely. The .doc format is closed, and things like headers and footers don't work in Word the same way as in OOo, as a result you can lose formatting information.

Can you apply the border and background to the paragraph in the header instead of the header itself?
