Slow down the select

I'm not sure if this is something that would be set for the operating system or in Open Office but how do I slow down the select with the mouse? If I move just a little bit off what I am trying to select then it tries to select the whole document.

I am using Ubuntu and the latest open office.

Any ideas?

No, that's an OpenOffice issue.

I don't know what you're trying to select specifically, but for fine control, use the keyboard. Hold the shift key and use the arrow keys to move the selection endpoint.

You might combine Acknak's suggestion with your own: Click at the start, then hold down the SHIFT key, and click at the end of the text to be selected.

Mine doesn't do that. What kind of content are you working with? Is everything in a table, for example, or is there anything else that might be noteworthy?

Thanks for trying. Neither of those is specific enough. There are many flavors and versions of Ubuntu and some are more stable than others, so you need to be very specific about the exact version you're using.

Also "the latest version" means next to nothing in any context. Regarding OOo, I've seen people just within the past few months post that they're using "the latest version" but in fact were using 1.1.5! They only thought they had the latest. And it's only "the latest" for a finite period of time. After a new version comes out, no one else who comes across your post when they're searching for relevant problems will know what version you actually have... so they won't know whether your problem is relevant to theirs. Last but not least, taking release 2.3 for example, you don't have version 2.3, but either 2.3.0 or 2.3.1, and there is a significant difference. The x.x.1 versions are bug fixes.

No matter what you're talking about, please always give the exact version you use. If you need help finding it, you can always ask when you post your question. At least we'll know you're concerned about giving the right details, so we won't mind waiting for them.

Or you can use Extension Selection mode. Press F8 to toggle between Extension & Standard modes, indicated in the status bar (where you can also click to cycle through three modes, Extension, Standard, & Additional).

Warning! I pointed this out because the feature is there, and somone must have once used it, maybe even finding it helpful. Mostly I think it's a mode people enter accidentally, and subsequently go mad.
