OpenOffice Writer Seeking Microsoft Word

Post by DaveTheBotanist »

Friends

I have an eBox computer which came bundled with Microsoft Office. I never downloaded the Microsoft Product. OpenOffice was working just fine for what seems like years. Then all of a sudden, when I go to open a file with the suffix .doc I get a message from the Microsoft package asking me to register. How do I return to being able to open and work with .doc files? Any help or direction will be appreciated.

Are you certain you were using OpenOffice.org, and not the trial version of Office 2007 which comes bundled with many new computers?
(I don't know what is bundled on eBox computers.. is this the little fanless mini PC you're talking about?)

With the trial version of Office 2007, you can use it unrestricted for a fixed period. After that period is over, you get a popup message like you describe, and you must purchase a license from Microsoft to continue using Office 2007. As well, Office 2007 defaults to a file format that is incompatible with pretty much everything on the planet (interesting blog entry on this topic: http://www.sutor.com/newsite/blog-open/?p=2031 )

If you have OpenOffice.org installed, you can get the file associations in Windows to point to OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office.

If OpenOffice.org is not installed, and you have room to download and install it (I'm assuming limited storage space on the eBox?), you can go to http://www.openoffice.org and download the latest version.
openSUSE 11.4, KDE4.6 with OpenOffice.org 3.3

I'm sure I have OPen Office - I have never downloaded the trial version. Could you explain how to point the files to OpenOffice - is there some setting that must be modified?

Please explain your OS (Win or Linux)and OOo version.
That information needed to figure out your problem.
Not too clear me, you opened a document and OOo gone?
You got your eBox machine with preinstalled OOo?
AOO 4.0 and LibO 4 on Win 8

Right-click on a .doc file and select Open With from the context menu. What is the first application listed on the sub-menu? Are any other applications listed on the sub-menu?
