I am trying to persuade business friends to use OO, I am also trying to save all my docs as .odt.
Can my .odt docs be emailed and opened by others when they don't have OO installed.
My reason for this request (which I cannot see in faq or search) is that I feel it preferable for long term OO viability that we should save in its own format/extension rather than in Word .doc format, but people must be able to easily open .odt docs.

Re: Open .odt without having OO
Can you open a .doc file without installing some software?
You can open ODF text documents or spreadsheets in Google Docs. There are some other web apps and Linux applications that will open them as well.
The best situation is to get everyone to use OOo: it's a free download and not hard to install. Unfortunately, that's often not practical. Most people exchange documents with MS Office users by using OOo to send the document as a .doc file.

Re: Open .odt without having OO
There are lots of options available. Many other word processors on the market work just fine with .odt documents (KOffice for example).
Assuming that your business friends are still in the dark ages of computing and stuck using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office (which as you know, does not natively support open ISO standards), they can install the Sun ODF Plugin 1.1 for Microsoft Office. This will give MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint the ability to read, edit and save to the ISO-standard Open Document Formats.
