Permanently highlighted bullets.

I am composing a resume in OpenOffice 2.2.1 for Mac OSX.
I created a paragraph style to define list portions of the document, including bullets.

At one point, I highlighted some text that I wanted to come back to. The text had the auto-updating paragraph style applied to it; when I highlighted it, all of the bullets in the document became highlighted as well. I undid the highlighting I had just made (ctrl+z) but the bullets remained with their yellow background. I even undid several steps back, to no avail.

I tried saving and restarting OO, but the yellow remained behind the bullets. I tried selecting all text in the document and applying "no fill", which unhighlighted everything in the document -- except for the bullets. I tried export to a pdf, the highlighting persisted. I tried modifying the style to remove the bullets, and then redefine them. They came back -- with their cursed halo intact.

How can I unhighlight these d*mned bullets? Any suggestions? I appreciate whatever you might have to offer, that won't require reformatting all of the text from scratch. :P

thanks!

Do you use .doc format?
Can you upload here a sample file?

Does it help to select those paragraphs and choose Format> Default Formatting? That might remove character styles as well, if you applied any (it does in 2.3.1, anyway) but what it does is return the paragraph to its original format.
