Mac OS X 10.5.1 - Problemt with all Types of OOo

Post by adamc »

I have just bought myself a Mac (it came on Thursday), and instaled OpenOffice.org for Mac from this site. However, I can open a database, and edit anything, apart from tables. Base complains about a JRE not being installed. I have tried to find one to download, but the Apple site says there is already Java installed on my machine. Do I need to download something else, or am I stuck?
Also, is there a way to drag the icons of each individual program to the dock? I only have the OOo icon, not Writer, Base, Impress etc, which I would prefer.

TIA.

Re: Base won't run propery - Mac OS x 10.5.1

This thread indicates that the Java features of OpenOffice.org don't work in Leopard. Without Java, Base won't function. Those features that don't require Java, though, will work.

There is an Aqua (i.e. non-X11) version of OpenOffice.org in the works, but my understanding is that it is in Alpha at the moment and should not be used for "production" or serious work.

NeoOffice, an independent port/fork of OpenOffice.org does work in Leopard, but it uses an older version of OpenOffice.org (version 2.2.1 as opposed to the current OpenOffice.org version 2.3.1).

New problem, same subject. I downloaded OOo Aqua Alpha from the main site, and it still asks for a JRE. Am I missing something? Can someone post a link to the download?
Can I hack the X11 version of OOo to find the JRE? Or has someone already done this, with a link available?
Can someone give me a link to NeoOffice, preferabbly the torrent, because both downloads I have tried have failed, as Mac OS X has been unable to mount them.
Also, when the Aqua version of OOo is installed the taskbar is a mess. Some icons have pink bg's, and every one of them is upside down. Is this a known bug?

There are already JREs available on your Mac; I'm not sure how to make OO Aqua recognize them; hopefully one of the folks familiar with it will post in regards to that.

I'm not sure there is a torrent link for NeoOffice, but see this article on Using Curl to Download NeoOffice.

If that doesn't do it, post a question on the NeoOffice Support Forum, and someone will help you figure out what's going on.

Too many questions in one thread. Please open a new thread/topic for each question otherwise you will probably not get an answer because it will be unclear to the casual reader what exactly your specific problem is. Bear in mind that many of the volunteers who contribute their time and effort to this site may not be native English speakers.

Anyway, back to your Leopard question. OOo Aqua doesn't recognise the installed JVM that comes with Leopard, so no you can't just activate it. Normally, this is done by going to Tools > Options > Java, waiting a bit and then usually the Java configuration dialog will display which versions of the JVM are present on the system, and you can then select one and close the dialog, close OOo completely then restart it. However, this procedure is reported as not working in Leopard. Blame Apple, and not OOo, for tinkering with their JVM (and their X11 environment, among other things). There are currently very few Mac developers in the OOo poject who have access to a Leopard Mac OSX, because these developers are nearly all volunteers and simply can't afford to go out and buy the latest version of Mac OSX just for the fun of it, with the risk of screwing up their current production systems. Although I'm not a developer, I deliberately haven't upgraded to Leopard from Tiger for the very reason that I don't want to screw up the apps I already have installed which I use for production purposes, at least not until I can be certain that they will all run properly.

Thanks Alex,
I will encounter these problems shortly when my new Mac will arrive.
Now I know what to do.

Please use the latest milestone build from http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/Ope ... C680_m246/ Java should work there on Leopard. http://shaunmcdonald131.blogspot.com/20 ... opard.html

Also see http://shaunmcdonald131.blogspot.com/20 ... aming.html for information on the filenames.

No, they won't work. Only the unofficial builds will work on Leopard.

Only OpenOffice.org source code is used, but a part comes from child workspaces (not integrated).

As workaround, you'll find them http://oooaqua.laurentbuisson.fr/

Again: you test them at your own risks, do not use them for production, and make a backup of your data.

Hi - ok, I have a new iMac too, so there's no point in my downloading this awesome program???

What do you recommend for someone who is NOT a hacker/nerd and can't figure this out by themselves?

Please? :(
