I am a beginner with OO and I am trying to get a portable version on my new U3 flash drive. It downloads okay, but when it tries to install, I repeatedly get an error message that it failed, but no explanation for why. As it happens, I was running a virus scan at the same time and the files came up as viruses and were quarantined. Does this have anything to do with the failure? If it does, wouldn't the security program prevented the files from being downloaded in the first place.. and not "waited" for installation? How do I fix this?

Please read the Survival Guide for the forum. I guess you're running Windows, so I move this thread to the Windows forum.

Disable your antivirus and install OOo, it should be fine.

Thank you so much... I will definitely read that survival guide. I knew that the virus program was the culprit but I never even thought of shutting it off for the install... DUH

The antivirus has no effect or influence on a portable version. Portable applications don't "install," they "unpack." There is no installation involved.

What is more likely the problem is the kind of USB flash drive. U3 is a new format but you can't just put any ol' portable app on it, you have to use versions specifically designed for U3. As far as I know, there aren't any U3 versions of portable OOo yet.
