[Solved] Auto download after upgrading - eats bandwidth!

I have been using OO for a while on WinXP Home Sp2.
Recently upgraded to 2.3
Tonight I open Wirter for the first time since i upgraded and after a while noticed that my computer was downloading 10s of megabytes.
it stopped when i closed OO.
I checked the autoupdate setting s in OO but that said that it was NOT to auto download updates.

I'm prettty annoyed. I want to control my download activity as my ISP limits me at some times and not at others.

Why has OO suddenly started autodownloding updates wihout asking me? I just lost a bunch of my monthly bandwidth.

Anyone else had this problem? Is it a known issue? Or an undocumented feature ?

Paul

As far as I know, OOo does not download anything. The update check merely notifies you when an update is available. You must still download and install the update yourself.

There is a plan to move to actual downloads at some point, but it is not yet in place as far as I know.

Do you (or your ISP) use any kind of proxy server? There have been problems with that situation in the past.

PS: I see now that 2.3.1 has the "download" option. Even so, I'm not sure that is actually functional yet, even if it is checked. Does anyone know for sure?

Since you say the option is not checked, then I think we can assume that OOo is not downloading anything.

PPS: On Linux, I might try "netstat" to see what network connections were active. It seems the same command is available on XP as well: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 90947.aspx. Perhaps there are other, better ways to investigate.

I think you are making too much of an assumption that "OO is not downloading anythign" because I checked with TCPview and it was connecting to an OO site AND it stopped when i closed OO. i am a very experienced computer user (ex-professional) so I know what I'm seeing

i think there is definitely a problem. i think it downloads even if "don;t dowenload is checkd".

I renamed my OOo user profile to be in the same situation as after upgrading, even checked the Update check option and haven't seen any traffic at all.

Have you opened a file with pictures inside that could be linked to their original location on the web ?

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The problem I was referring to caused high network traffic due to repeated attempts to contact an OO.org server. There were many packets on the wire, but nothing was being downloaded.

The problem was triggered when OOo had to go through a proxy to check for updates.

That was a while ago. I thought it was fixed, so this may be something different.

Ok, here it is; it was fixed a year ago: Issue 72834: Update notification is flooding network.

It could be a (temporary) problem on OO.org's side. If you are still seeing the problem after a day or so, I would definitely suggest you file an issue. Any information you can provide about the connections, I'm sure would help.

The trouble is now the moment has passed -- I can't reproduce it.
I had to post in haste before, so here's a more considered account of what I saw:

I got a nag from OO that a new version was available (2.3.1).
I did not allow the program to download then and there, but wrote a couple of documents, and later on I went to the OO site and directly downloaded OOo_2.3.1_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe
With OO closed, I installed the new version, but I don't recall getting any registration prompts.
I didn't open OO for a couple of days after installing the update.
Then I opened from a shortcut that runs writer it to a blank document.
I noticed the Quicklaunch appear icon in the system toolbar (but I alway have that switched off -- it was in fact switched off in my previous install of OO) and at the same time noticed download activity (I run netmeter). About 40-60MB had downloaded.
I shut down the quicklaunch icon but the downloading continued.
I then loaded TCPview (sysinternals) and saw connectionst to OO servers. I didn't note which ones -- sorry, but I was in a rush and my banwidth was getting eaten/
So I immediaetly shut down OO, and immedaiately the downloading stopped and the OO servers disappeared from TCPView.
THEN I started up OO writer again, immediately quicklaunch icon loaded, and downloaading started. I shut down quikclaunch and went into OO Tools/Options/Online Update. In there, "Check for updates automatically" was checked, but "Downlaod updates automatically" was NOT checked. Meanwhile I'm doing all this, the downloading continued, so I shut down OO again having had a further 20-30MB come out my bandwidth.
I've opened OO this morning with no recurrence of the problem
The only way I could try and reproduce this is to do a system restore a few days back and start over but it's too much of a pain and dangerous to lose a lot of work ...

thanks for your attention
