installation path

Post by msandow »

High everybody!

Yesterday trying a new installtion on a computer I faced the difficluty to choose the installation directory for OO. I used the combined Java OO Windows installer. During the installation of OO I wanted to select the installation folder manually but it seems that there is no possibility included. Maybe I missed something important.

An ysuggestions?

Thanks

What is wrong with the default C:\Program Files\<package> ?
Ubuntu 11.04-x64 + LibreOffice 3 and MS free except the boss's Notebook which runs XP + OOo 3.3.

the major problem is space. The original setup does not leave to much space. Recetnly a second hard disk is included to take all data and the programs.

If you select "Custom" during the installation you should be able to specify the path you want.

I know that this isn't really to do with OOo, but it does sound as if your system is in need of a major house clean. There are pros and cons as to whether you should partition your system or not. My personal view is that you always should with Windows. It's just too unreliable not to. I tend to split my XP systems into three partitions:
  • The C Partition which contains the system and core XP packages. This should fit into 10Gbytes, but 20 Gbyte is better. The Documents and Settings\Administrator and All Users goes here as well.
  • D = Documents and Settings for all other users and Shared Documents
  • E = the rest. Kids games, bulk stuff like RIPped CDs, Videos, etc.
The reason for this split is that I always take an image backup of C, regularly backup D (because that's where the things that I would cry if I lost live), and almost never bother backing up E. You need an image backup of C, because XP system restore is far from fool proof, and it is a lot easier to restore a 3 month old system image and work forward from there than rebuild your system. The only hassle with this is that XP Home doesn't allow you to create New Users on a separate partition to the system partition, though you can if you at willing to tweak the registry, which is what I do, but this definitely the subject for a separate forum!
