OK, this is my first post to this forum and it is not strictly speaking on topic because the problem also exists in MS Office. Actually, it is really a problem with the Avery labels themselves. They aren't made to their own standard. Staples brand labels that are "same size as Avery 5160/8260" are made correctly.
The problem with the Avery brand is fairly subtle but, with the Avery brand label sheets, the addresses in the second column of labels on each page are a little closer to the left margin than the first column of labels and in the third column they are closer still. Because the labels I created are not printed right up against the left margin, all the labels are OK but the first column of labels on each page are different from the second column of labels and both are different from the third column of labels. If you are anal, you won’t like it. I made these labels for my wife and she is anal.
This problem does not exits with the Staples brand.
I tried creating a mailing list using Microsoft Word and got the same result with respect to the spacing. I had other problems creating the mailing list using MS Word 97 which is why I chose Open Office.
The labels themselves are 1” X 2 5/8” in both brands. The difference is the gap between the columns of labels. The gap between the columns of labels in the Avery brand is 5/32” while the gap is 1/8” (or 4/32”) in the Staples brand. The standard templates for creating labels in both Microsoft Office and Open Office obviously assume a 1/8” gap.
Using a user-specified label size rather than a standard label size, I was able to create labels that worked correctly for the Avery brand. but of course they wouldn't have worked for the Staples brand.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Did I just get a bad Avery batch?
Thanks
Jim

Re: Avery standard 8160 labels
Hi and welcome to the forums.
I think you would have had more replies if you'd posted this thread in the Writer forum.
I haven't seen this but then I never buy the Avery labels, I buy the Staples ones for financial reasons. I just checked and the ones I have are Staples that are supposed to tbe the same as Avery J8160, and they work like a dream. (I do a lot of mailing lists, As I run the membership side for a club.)
