[Solved] Error when starting OpenOffice 2.3

Running OpenOffice 2.3 on Vista Ultimate (32-bit).
I right-click the QuickStarter icon in the taskbar, select Text Document and receive the following error message:
Error loading BASIC of document
file:///C:Users/David/AppData/Roaming/OpenOffice.org2/user/basic/dialog.xlc/:
General Error.
General input/output error.
I click OK and the message reappears. I click OK a second time and it disappears and I can proceed with my work.
Any idea what may be causing this and how I might fix it?

Try that:
OOo user guide wrote:What to to do with a General error General input/output error This error message indicates that the files script.xlc and dialog.xlc, could be missing or corrupted. Look for them in the directory
$HOME/.openoffice.org2/user/basic under *NIX
or, under Windows C:\Document and Settings\<username>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org<release>\user\basic.
To fix the problem, try exiting OpenOffice.org (including the Quickstarter, if any) and copy these from the directory <where_OOo_is_installed>/presets/basic/ under *NIX,
to $HOME/.openoffice.org2/user/basic
or, under Windows, from C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org <release>\presets\basic
to C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org <release>\user\basic
Note: To be absolutely safe, one could also delete the local settings directory; however,. the penalty for doing this is that it is possible tolose all personal settings and customizations.

$HOME is for Linux systems as said.
Under Vista, your profile is C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice.org2.

OK. But I don't have an Appdata folder. Mine is called Apps and when I try to create an appdata folder, I am told it already exists. Under apps, I have no folders referring to openoffice.org2. I appreciate your help.

Have you made your Explorer show the hidden files and folders?

OK! I learned how to show the hidden files and found the dialog.xlc file, and replaced the two files mentioned above, but now ehn I open writer, it looks for a file called dialog.xlb. Any ideas? Thanks for your attention to my inquiry.

it is fixed !! Whew!! I had to also find the script.xlb and dialog.xlb files and move them to the standard folder under roaming. It works. Thanks for your help with the procedure. I had not made the hidden files visible in Vista before.

I've had the same problem on windows 11 however the path is a little different than stated. I copied the basic file from the program files(86)>open office4>presets>basic, and then used this path: This pc>windowssd(C):>users>(name)>appdata>Roaming>openoffice>4>user>basic. I then renamed the original basic file so I didn't lose it if it didn't work and then just pasted in the new basic file. It works like a champ after that.
