[Solved-Workaround] "Scripting system error" on Tiger

Post by grenache »

Hi,
I recently had to reinstall OpenOffice and the only version I could find was OOo2.3 which I successfully installed. However, when I open OOo I get this message: could not run this script because of a scripting system (OSA) error
-1750

There is an Edit button but this produces: Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable.
So I can open OOo but cannot use it. Also have X 11 and the latest version of Java installed. But X11 does not open automatically with OpenOffice as it used to when I had the earlier version -- OOo 2.2.1. -- I think.
Previously, X 11 would open then OpenOffice, and it worked fine. Hope someone can help.
Regards
Operating system -- OS X 10.4.11 on 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4

HI
from where you got this OOo version? Official site? Try using 2.3.1 from http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/downl ... 4-PPC.html if you can live without wizzards.

Thanks,
Yes, i had downloaded it from there. However, since then, I reinstalled Mac OS 10.4 again and got the latest updates to X11 and Java and today I reinstalled 0Oo2.31 and it was OK but it does not work for Japanese, which I need, so I installed the Japanese version 2.2.1 but that won't open properly after asking "Do you want to use the fonts on your computer" to which I answered Yes. But that's a whole other story I guess.

Indeed. But there is a very active Japanese community so you should be able get a working version from Nakata Maho's site:
ftp://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/Open ... rg/MacOSX/ or if you prefer html then
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/Ope ... rg/MacOSX/

Try some versions (the "...RC..."-Versions with the highest number are a good starting point - these are identical to the released version). I would guess this one is the most recent one for PPC: http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/Ope ... all_ja.dmg
You may also try to contact japanese community directly or try to ask in OOos global users maling list.

Thank you Uwe for the links. Well, I used your last link and downloaded and installed the Japanese version of OOo2.3 and here is what it looks like.
Picture 2.png
The little white boxes are where the Japanese should be. The same thing happens in the OOo2.3 English version when I open a Calc window for a file that contains Japanese. I suspect this is an X11 problem but I don't know how to deal with that.

Looks like no japanese Font available for OOo.
Quit OOo and X11
Delete <MyHomeDir>/Library/Application\ Support/OpenOffice.org/2/user/fonts/user_fondu_done
and <MyHomeDir>/Library/Application\ Support/OpenOffice.org2/user/fonts/user_fondu_done
(any one of them you may find)
Start OOo again. If asked about using or converting Fonts, say YES!
Report results

Thanks for your response and interest. Well, it has been a long time and I had given up on OpenOffice using X11 and switched to NeoOffice, the English version of which will load Japanese on spreadsheets. I had dumped all the OpenOffice-X11 applications, including the preferences, but on seeing your message I downloaded the Japanese version of 2.2.1, saying "Yes" to everything, which when opened, shows only little white boxes where the Japanese should be. So I believe this is an X11 problem as NeoOffice works with Japanese. The thing is, OpenOffice worked for me before but that was with the unupdated version of X11.
Anywhow, thank you for all your trouble.
