Just installe openoffice but...

Post by macroman »

First document I tried to open was a pdf file. ASCII filter options was the first thing that popped up. I made no changes. Clicked OK. The document came up scrambled. So I downloaded and adobe reader and that worked fine. Still comes up scambled in OO.

That's because OOo doesn't support PDF file formats for input. Yes, you can open DOC or ODF file and export it to PDF, but its a one-way function. One of the extensions project is nearing completion of a PDF importer, but its not released yet, and even then it will import them as a set of "slides" rather than a conventional text document.
Ubuntu 11.04-x64 + LibreOffice 3 and MS free except the boss's Notebook which runs XP + OOo 3.3.

The PDF reader I like is FoxIt Reader, available for Windows or Linux, or as a portable application (and no, it's not just the name I like! :D ). If the PDF is not protected against copying to the clipboard, you can select and copy content to paste into a Writer document. It doesn't copy the formatting, but you can obtain plain text, or use a snapshot tool to copy and paste a picture object into Writer.

Of course, Adobe Reader will do all or most of that too, but it's a much bulkier program and takes more resources than FoxIt, so I opted for the lighter weight application, and I run it as a portable version from my flash drive.
Cheers!
