I have tried to send a private message - but I can't get it out of the Outbox.
Since I have never sent a message before I guess I can't have been prevented from sending.

A private message stays as long in your outbox as the recipient isn't reading it. So all you can do is write it and wait that the recipient starts reading it.

The idea of this is that you can choose to edit mails in your outbox -- that is at any time until the recipient has read it. It's standard phpBB functionality.

I must admit this tripped me up when I first saw it. After you understand how it works it's a very nice feature.

It may be worth a small note on that page explaining it's function.
