Formatting is Selecting Entire Word

I frequently apply underline and strikethrough, and struggle with Writer assuming I want to apply the formatting to the entire word, or an adjacent word. How can I stop this behavior so that only the highlighted text has the formatting applied?

Works for me. I select something and underline the selection or I get the entire word around the cursor underlined if nothing is selected.

Works fine for me also. Are you sure you don't double-click the word?

What is the sequence you are using to apply the formatting?

I can be typing a word, turn on underlining, type a few more characaters, turn it off and then finish the word and the bit in the middle of the word is underlined and the start and end are not. This works whether I use Ctrl-U or click the Underline button to turn underlining on and off.

Also, if I select a portion of a word and turn on italics, bold or underlining it is only the highlighted segment of the word that is affected.

Are you doing something different?

Create a character style that does this and apply it ?

If this does not work then maybe there is a problem with your installation?
