[Solved] Auto-update of Calc spreadsheet via Google Docs

Post by Oohappyuser »

For security reasons, I wanted to edit a long-existing spreadsheet with data obtained from online sources. I wanted to do so in the same spreadsheet which I loaded to Google Docs. It all went well.

The process said the original MS-Office version would be auto-updated too. That did not happen, possibly because I use Open Office. I do keep it as an *.xls

Is there a solution please?

I'm not sure I understand your issue.
You mean that you have a .xls file on Google drive and that you modified it with AOO Calc and that it did not update?
Google Docs is an application to edit files too but if you use it to edit the file, then the issue is not related to AOO at all.
What do you mean by security reason? Backup in the cloud instead of local file on your machine?

Sorry Hagar. Thankyou for getting involved.

I found there is no problem. I misread about the auto-updating. The original sheet on my W10 C:/ will not be auto-updated from changes on Google Drive.

About security, the sheet requires data from online banks and I have been advised to use my Chromebook for banking. The CB should be more secure for reasons I do not fully understand.

I'm not sure sheets can fetch data on a Google drive. Not sure if it creates a virtual folder on the local machine where the file could get the data instead of the remote drive. Getting data from the remote location may need some kind of access rights that are not granted for such update feature. But I don't really know.

Not sure a CB is better than anything else. It all depends on the security you apply on your file, if it is encrypted or not for example. Google would be the last thing I would trust. I'm sure they scan all they can, including the content of anything put on their drive.

By the way, what file format do you use? Do you confirm you meant Google Drive and not Google Docs? Because fetching data from a Google Docs spreadsheet may be another step of complexity.

On drive c: it is .xls.

On Google Drive, it is in My Drive / Google docs. That is where it went when I loaded it from C: .

Thanks for the tips and your further thoughts. I will encrypt now.
I will check reason(s)with the person who told me to use the CB. I may get back to you on that.

As I am achieving what I want and don't completely know what I'm doing I will take a Valium and have a lie down for the time being :D
