[Solved] Number pages automatically

Post by ocdj1123 »

i can't figure out how to insert page numbering such that each page is automatically sequentially numbered. if a document has 15 pages i want OO to number them appropriately rather than having to number each page separately. so how can i manage that?

Page numbers are displayed by a "field" in either the header or footer. Here is a brief description of achieving that. (I use the footer, but you can select Header if you want.)
Select the menu item Insert -> Footer and choose the page style you want to have a footer. You are probably using only the Default page style. If so, that will be the only option.
Click in the footer to place the cursor at its left edge. If you want the page numbers in the middle or at the right edge, use the Tab key to move the cursor.
Select the menu item Insert -> Fields -> Page Number.

Every page with the Default page style should now show a page number. If you have a more complex requirement, there is a tutorial on Page Numbering

For beginners, you can install an extension:

that doesn't automatically number all following pages. i know with absolute certainty that that can be done [or it could in an earlier release]. no help topic explains how.

A Page Number field in the header or footer of a specific Page Style will repeat in all instances of that Page Style; if there are other Page Styles used in the document, the Page Number field should be inserted in one instance of the header or footer of each other Page Style in use.

If the document originated in or is saved in MS Word format, then there may be multiple (many, many) autogenerated Page Styles and you have a major reformatting problem.
