ASCII filter options dialog

Post by Fingers »

Files I used to be able to access now come up with a "character set" screen. None of the choices seem to work so I can't open my documents

Edit: Changed subject, was character set

What is the format of these files? .odt, .doc, .docx, or .pdf, or something else?

files are XML 1.0 text. I have no idea if they were always this format.

OpenOffice.org XML 1.0 Text Document (.wpd) this is from Properties

In OpenOffice it is best to work in its native format, .odt. .wpd is, I think, a Word Perfect file format. Are they your own files, generated by you in OpenOffice, or are they imported from another source and editor?

After a quick search it turns out that LibreOffice can open .wpd files. So give LibreOffice a try and see how you fair there. There are several good reasons for making the switch anyway, some of which are mentioned here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information
LibreOffice 25.8.4.2 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro. 25H2
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.16 [Portable Apps]
For Java I use Adoptium Temurin JRE LTS Releases.

I think what is important is to ascertain how the files come to be .wpd files in the first place.

These are my own files, likely from Word, but I've been accessing them over the past years, to send via email to others. Suddenly I can't open them even though I "thought" I'd saved them as Open files.

Old Word files should by default be .doc and in newer versions .docx. Perhaps these files were written on a legacy machine using WordPerfect?

It is important to remember that all computers are not identical: they may have different operating systems - Windows, MacOS, linux - and then differing selections of software and fonts, all of which contribute to variations in what is displayed, if indeed display is possible on a different machine to the original.

It is not an attached file. It is only some copied characters from the file. We can not examine the structure of the file based on some copied characters.

I have not any .wpd file on my computer, but here is a link to a sample .wpd file:
http://product.corel.com/en/WPO2002_Box ... wnload.htm

I can open it in my LibreOffice 7.5.8 version. But I can not open it in my portable AOO 4.1.15 version
