AOO not loading at startup

This used to work.
When I enable Load OpenOffice during system start-up under Options/OpenOffice/Memory/OpenOffice Quickstarter, it doesn't stay enabled. When I close the Options panel and re-open it, the Quickstarter option is disabled again.
Any suggestions?

Try to reset your OpenOffice user profile.

Sounded promising but no joy, I'm afraid.
Followed the steps and new profile was created.
Even re-booted.
However, the Load OpenOffice during system startup option gets disabled (or not saved) as soon as I exit the Options panel.

Try LibreOffice and see if you have better luck with that. There are several good reasons for making the switch anyway, some of which are mentioned here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information

Ironically it seems there is an open bug report in LibreOffice for just this problem; the report was created in 2014.
