[Solved] Position cursor before/after image

Post by stebobibo »

This might be a simple matter to do if you have a small image (idk, didn't test with one). But in my case the image is large, it takes up a whole page, actually going over the margins even. So how do I position my cursor either right before or right after it? I can't click anywhere on the page without selecting the picture and then there is no cursor. I can click on the white space outside of the margins but that doesn't do anything.

My document is a blank page followed by the page that's fully taken up by the picture. It was generated like that (this was a note I backed up from my phone). In my case, right now I would like to add stuff after it, like a new page and then populate that page with text. But I've tried to add page breaks to get new pages, but they just add them before my image.

Also, if there is just general hotkeys for moving the cursor around, I would love to know those. Some of them would solve the current problem. I'm talking about things like: move cursor to next page, cursor to end of page, to end of document, beginning of document, etc.

Thanks for your help!

HELP - F1 - is your friend. Open Help and search keyboard;navigation. Or see any of these pages.

Alternatively you could select the image and resize it to fit on the page. Right click, Picture, Crop.

You can add next/previous page commands eg to a toolbar

You can right click the picture for a menu and change the wrap to "In Background" to access the page and then change it back if desired.

I just downloaded java from here:https://www.java.com/en/download/, and restared my computer. Did I do something wrong, or is there something I need to do within OO?

Re Java: see Troubleshooting Open/LibreOffice and Java and note especially that you need a 32 bit version of Java as OpenOffice is a 32 bit application.

A little bit OFF, but is is related anyway:
Always optimize your images BEFORE you insert them into a document. Resize, resample them to the desired physical size and resolution with a third party image editor software.
You can decrease the color depth too. And never use .bmp file format. Use the .jpg or the .png file format - depended on the content/character of the image.

You can decrease the size of your document with this method, and it makes the images more manageable.

Please, edit the initial post in the topic: add the word [Solved] at the beginning of the subject line - if your problem has been solved.

My suggestion was not intended as a fix for your problem, but as a helpful hint to permit more accurate position selecting in any complex Writer document.

Most doing serious editing or document origination using Writer will have that option turned on.

You don't specify how the image is anchored. Anchoring the picture as a character allows you to follow the cursor.

Thanks everyone for your help. What worked for me in the end is Anchoring as a Character and then clicking off the image (I had to click off the page because the picture took up the whole page), and then pressing ctrl+end. I needed the answers from multiple of you to get there, so thanks again everyone for your help!

Another question though. So, thanks to Jeje, I now have buttons in my toolbar for navigating to next/prev page. The problem with this is, it only brings you to the end of the page. What I want to know is: how to bring the cursor to the beginning of any page?

Also, as an FYI, I was able to get the correct version of Java, and was able to search the help because of it. It's weird because here https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp on Java's download page, it doesn't actually tell you which version is 32 bit. You're just supposed to be able to deduce that yourself, while they could of just easily written 32 bit.

You can go to any page number using the Navigator - the little combobox in the top row is for entering the page number.

You can add commands to go to the start of the page and so on to a toolbar using the tools menu/customize. They're in the "Navigate" category.

Sorry, Jeje, that doesn't help me at all. The Navigator doesn't move your cursor at all. If you know what commands those are, please share a screenshot. Remember, I'm looking for "cursor to the beginning of any page".
