[Issue] Update Links prompts during open
[Issue] Update Links prompts during open
My Window 7 pc just died (had OO 4.1.15 installed) and my data files were on an external drive. Have attached the drive to a different Windows 7 pc (also has OO 4.1.15 installed) and the files open but there are an annoying series of prompts to "update all links" which never happened on the old PC. I have searched high and low for settings to correct this and all seem OK except for EDIT / LINKS where the update status is set to MANUAL and changing to AUTOMATIC IS GRAYED OUT. In TOOLS / OPTIONS / OO CALC / GENERAL it is set to UPDATE FILES ON OPENING "ALWAYS". How can I get it to automatically update files when I load them without this annoying and time consuming prompts that were not there on my old PC using the same version of OO and using the same data files? PLEASE HELP. THANKS.

Re: [Dropped] Update Links Annoyance
Can you upload the file as suggested in the post immediately before yours?
Edit: This question was in reference to discussion in another topic about links from LHFromCA in 2023. -- MrProgrammer, forum moderator |

Some cell has some reference to that file. Search for the file name in formulas (Edit>Find/Replace with "Search within formulas") and do whatever needs to be done. Any external reference in a formula establishes a link.

Re: [Dropped] Update Links Annoyance
Thanks for the feedback. The links are deliberate and valid references to cells in other OO spreadsheets located in the same directory (folder). This problem didn't exist on the PC that died. Nothing has changed in any of the linked sheets, just the drive is now attached to a different PC running the same version of OO 4.1.15. Uploading any or all of the linked files is not feasible since they are filled with personal banking and credit card information.

Re: [Dropped] Update Links Annoyance
This would seem to be the heart of the problem. Where the attached files are set to MANUALLY update in one area and AUTOMATIC is grayed out. In the other spot AUTOMATICALLY update is SET.

Re: [Dropped] Update Links Annoyance
Edit the cells? They don't need editing. The links were/are correct and worked fine on the dead PC. And they still manually update correctly, so they still work. What does not work is the cells AUTOMATICALLY updating. I didn't have to / shouldn't have to MANUALLY update them every time I load the sheet. I can see that the EDIT / LINKS page shows where to make the change but the problem is that that option is grayed out and I cannot make the change.

Issue 127582 - Needless to have "Update links" dialog prompt
There is some discussion in this confirmed, open issue about security settings, perhaps the reason you have difficulty now and didn't earlier. I don't use external links and thus don't experience the problem myself. I decline to experiment for you. It's your problem, not mine. The issue says that the problem began to appear in version 4.1.4. You could consider installing 4.1.3.
Still no spreadsheet document attachment from trcjt.ca. I'm done here, having provided the ink to issue 127582.

Re:Update Links Annoyance
Don't normally need to ask for help here so apologize if my post showed up in the wrong place. I logged in and entered what I hoped/thought was a new post. While I appreciate the effort of posting a link to issue 127582 it does nothing to help solve my problem as far as I can see. Shall I try again to post it as a new post, if I can figure out how to do that correctly. Google searching shows that this problem has existed since as far back as OO Version 4.1.3 and yet I can find no solutions anywhere.

Suddenly must answer "Update Links YES or NO" repeatedly

The links all still work, but it is annoying and time wasting to have to repeatedly approve UPDATE LINKS: YES or NO. I've searched Google and find that this problem seems to have been around since at least OO v4.1.3 but I have not found a solution anywhere. PLEASE HELP. THANKS.

Re: [Dropped] Update Links Annoyance
The link to the bug has been posted to show that it is a still open bug. Thus no solution yet.
Maybe LibreOffice behaves differently.
As for dropped topics, we can't know for sure why there is no reply. It could be a problem with wrong spam labeling or something else, especially with the problem with gmail addresses since several months now.

Thank you for creating your own topic, trcjt.ca. I moved your posts from LHFromCA's topic to this one, so all of the discussion can relate to your problem. It is no longer necessary to check the other topic.

Re: Suddenly must answer "Update Links YES or NO" repeatedly
Thanks for the feedback. Just to be clear and in response to a reply above, there are no macros involved in this issue but Tools/Options/OpenOffice/Security/MacroSecurity is set to the LOWEST level, just in case. I can't find any other security setting to modify or review.

Thanks for doing that for me. I'm finding it difficult navigating a site with which I am not familiar."Thank you for creating your own topic, trcjt.ca.
