General Input Error opening RTF document

Post by rutha29 »

I'm using Windows 10 and have been using OpenOffice for several years without a problem
A couple days ago I updated to v 4.1.14.
After Installation I created two .rtf files but when I tried to open them today it showed a general input error and the files are inaccessible.

I uninstalled OpenOffice 4.1.14 including leftover files, downloaded and tried to install old v 4.1.10.
But even though the uninstall program I used showed that .14 was completely gone, when I tried to install .10 it gives message that .14 is still there and so older version .10 can't be installed.

I think that 4.1.14 is the problem and that's why I uninstalled it.

Any suggestions?

Edit: Changed subject, was Numerous problems installing 4.1.14

Give LibreOffice a try. There are good reasons to do so, some of which are given here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Some Useful Information
LibreOffice 25.8.1.1 (x64) installed to Windows 11 Pro. 25H2
Apache OpenOffice Portable 4.1.15 [Portable Apps]
For Java I use Adoptium Temurin JRE LTS Releases.

The problem is most likely improper user rights for OpenOffice to open files; this could be caused by some Windows 10 updates, which seem to do strange, unexpected, things.

.rtf files are plain text, so try opening one with Notepad or Wordpad: do not Save over the .rtf file to prevent any damage. If Notepad/Wordpad opens the file, you know it exists and can then sort out the rights of OpenOffice to permit it open the files.

As I have not used Windows in any detail for many years I can give no directed help, but I am sure other Forum members can do so.
