[Solved] Display fractions as characters

Post by G3v3K3 »

Help! I've been keeping my records on OpenOffice for some years, but as of 1/24/22 it doesn't show common fractions in reduced format, about 2/3 their normal size. Did OO quit the reduced format? Can anyone give me a clue as to what's happening? Blessings upon you for any help.

The version (4.1.2) shown by your signature is surely older than the date you assign to the reported failure (2022-01-24 ?). The question "Did OO quit the reduced format?" is therefore obsolete if not you installed that old version for some strange reason at that date.

Changes of software behavior may occur due to
- version change
- re-installation resulting in a different user profile
- system malfunction
- changes to settings (supposed in this case: AutoCorrect / Replacement options)
- changed document language / UI language / locale combining with above cause
- user profile corruption
- unexpected changes to the profile by a different user of the same profile
- probably some more causes ...

They were never reported to occur triggereed by a date change. (This except for a few viruses of an older generation. And that wasn't related to AOO/OO.o, but to the OperatingSystem.)
On Windows 10: LibreOffice 25.8.4 and older versions, PortableOpenOffice 4.1.7 and older, StarOffice 5.2

Please indicate if these three statements are correct or incorrect:
• You are asking about Writer
• You are asking about displaying 1/2 as the character ½, 1/4 as the character ½, 3/4 as the character ¾
• You are not asking about displaying other fractions like 3/5 or 2/7 as characters

No, this is still supported. In Writer, you can use the AutoCorrect feature. The feature has pre-defined English language corrections for ½, ½, and ¾. View the corrections with Format → AutoCorrect → AutoCorrect Options → Replace. I didn't look at other languages.

If you are entering text in English, ensure that it is so marked with Tools → Language → For All Text → English. Setting the proper language for your text allows Writer to locate the corresponding replacement table. Next, tell Writer that replacements in your text are permitted by ensuring that Format → AutoCorrect → AutoCorrect Options → Options → Use Replacement Table → [T] is selected.

Ensure Format → AutoCorrect → While Typing is selected. Now when you type 1/2 and press space, it should change to ½. If there is a situation in which you don't want 1/2 changed, use Edit → Undo immediately after the AutoCorrect makes the change.

The Replacement Table dialog will let you create AutoCorrects for other fractions if you like. You don't need to use English, but the setting at the top of the replacement table which matches the language which you've set for your text must contain the corrections you want.

Read about AutoCorrect in Help → Index or in Writer Guide: Working with Text or searching for topics about it in the Writer Forum. If you cannot get AutoCorrect to perform replacements after following the steps (Mark text, Enable [T], Enable While Typing) this could indicate your user profile is corrupted. Reset the user profile to fix that.

If this solved your problem please go to your first post use the Edit button and add [Solved] to the start of the Subject field. Select the green checkmark icon at the same time.
