I have been running Windows 10 & OpenOffice version 4.1.11 on my Lenovo 510a IdeaCentre PC for a little over a year. Until recently, I have had no issues using Writer & Calc. In the last week or so I have had numerous crashes of both applications. I saw the OpenOffice notification for downloading & installing version 4.1.14 of OpenOffice:
OpenOffice 4.1.14 is available.
The installed version is OpenOffice 4.1.11.
Note: Before downloading an update, please ensure that you have sufficient access rights to install it.
A password, usually the administrator's or root password, may be required..
I am the only user on my PC and have never had to worry about setting my Admin password to download. The note about access rights and password is a bit unnerving. I did not install version 4.1.11 on my PC, I paid a fee to a reputable Computer Repair shop to do it. As I said, it has been working fine for over a year. I looked at the release notes for 4.1.11 and it lists in its System Requirements:
- Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8.
Any thoughts or ideas about how to proceed to get my PC back on track?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Do I need to set my Windows 10 admin password before downloading version 4.1.14?
Hi and welcome to the forum!
Don't worry, it is a standard note in case some users have a machine with restrictions. If it is your own machine, then few chance you'll need anything.
Note that there are some minor bugs in AOO 4.1.14.
You may try LibreOffice, it is more actively developed.
Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks Hagar. I have not heard of LibreOffice before.i am retired and don’t want to learn how to use new Office-type Apps if not necessary. I do like the OpenOffice apps that I use.
As a side note that I didn’t mention in my post, I have a second PC running Windows 7 that I still use. So, if I have OpenOffice files (Writer or Calc) that I want to use on that PC, I save those file in Windows XP format (.doc/.xls) in order to edit them. When I brought those files back to my new PC and edit them (Writer or Calc), that seems to be when the crashes occur. Not immediately, but after new formatting is added, and the file is saved in the MS Format, it freezes OpenOffice.
Thanks again.

If you use AOO or LO, then stick to native format ODF (.odt for text and .ods for spreadsheets).
The .doc/.xls format is deprecated and will lead to glitches at each import/export operation in AOO/LO.
If you really need to work with MS Office file formats, then use MS Office.

You wouldn't have to learn how to use LibreOffice, it is very similar to OpenOffice but more up to date and actively developed. LibreOffice will open all your old OpenOffice documents without issues. There are good reasons to switch to LibreOffice some of which are given here: [Tutorial] Considering a Switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? If you can use OpenOffice you won't have any difficulty in using LibreOffice.
