[Solved] DST caused: The file has been changed since it was opened

Edit: Split from The file has been changed since it was opened for editing because the original topic concerned a problem in early February 2013, thus a Daylight Saving Time switch did not occur then.

It just happened to me, but I know why: last night we changed from summer time (Daylight Saving Time DST) to winter time. Any document that I left open last night is complaining this morning.

Thank you for the report that a Daylight Saving Time switch can cause this situation. So since you know why, you just answer Save anyway to the prompt and the problem is gone, right? Presumably if you had five documents open, you will need to do this five times.

There are plenty of posts on the forum from folks who've lost documents because Windows decided to install updates on it's own because it sensed that you hadn't used the computer for a long time. Leaving documents open overnight seems like asking for trouble. Good luck with that.

I agree with MrProgrammer: it is very unwise, on any computer and any operating system, to leave documents open unattended for any long period, such as overnight. Best always to close documents before leaving a computer, or at least Save their current state (Ctrl S will do that) but closure is best.

Two thoughts.

When you print a file, AOO and LO save the printer settings (if you have enabled it) in the file. This causes a change in the file and un-greys the Save icon.

Second, if, say, you type a space, AOO and LO recognise that as a change and set the file changed marker and un-grey the Save icon. If you now delete that space, the file is identical to how it was before, but AOO and LO consider it to have been changed.

That being said, neither of these give the described error message so I guess the error message is given when the file meta-data (date, time etc) is changed.

All edits made since the last save are held in PC memory and not written to disk. So, any problem with the PC hanging or shutting down or powering off; or any problem with AOO or LO hanging will cause all those edits to be lost. Never walk away from a PC without saving work you want to keep.
