If you are inserting a file from a different format, the best approach is to open that file in a separate instance of OpenOffice or its own application, Select All (Ctrl A) Copy (Ctrl C), switch to the destination instance of OpenOffice and /Edit /Paste Special, choosing Plain text from the popup. You will have to reformat to your usage, but that shouldn't take long.
