I have a 16kb document in my file which I created last night and today it doesn't want to open so I can continue to work on it.

Telling us what doesn't happen is next to useless in trying to figure out what the problem is.
A better idea is to tell us what does happen. eg: Any error messages (be specific as to the wording)

Sorry, but nothing happens. The document won't open. No error message, nothing.

I suspect you have a hung OpenOffice process. Try rebooting your computer.
OpenOffice 4.1 on Windows 10 and Linux Mint
