[Closed] Read Error. Format Error discovered in the file …

Post by CLD3 »

Hi there.

I know this has been covered in many previous threads. I have tried the help tutorial myself, but I am struggling to get XML Copy Editor to open my file.
I have an Open Office Calc file previously made in Excel, but now only used in OO Calc. When I tried to open the file today I received an error:
Read Error: Format Error discovered in the file in sub-document context.xml at 2,223751 (row, col)

Is there anyone who could take a look at the file and see what is wrong?

Can you upload the file to the forum?

I cannot extract the content.xml from the zip file. I tried on both a Windows and a Linux system. Maybe someone else will have more luck but that isn't a good sign.

I could not get content.xml on a linux (Xubuntu 20.04.1) system; it reported that file checksum was wrong.

I have never seen a file like this before. content.xml is very badly corrupted and, in my opinion, there are so many errors (hundreds) it is not recoverable not least because it is not obvious how the corruption should be corrected.

Some of the XML tags have been incorporated into the text strings so something really horrible has happened. Text stringss have been truncated.

This is a typical corruption:

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

• First, the ZIP archive is damaged. The "bad CRC" message for a single file suggests to me that the damage occurred after the content was processed by the ZIP process but before the data was written to disk. Perhaps the ZIP dictionary has been overlaid with garbage.

For what it's worth - and it isn't worth much - this is the user content remaining in the file. As you can see it is badly corrupted with XML commands.

Hi there,

Thanks to all for looking at this. I'm really not sure what happened to the file. I have been using it for many years. I'll admit defeat and start a new one!
I appreciate all the effort you have all gone to. Thank you.
