Saving an old document

Post by Wyatt Johnson »

I've used open office for years. Suddenly if I open a document I can't save it. I usually add a 1 to the name then go to windows browser and delete the name without the 1 and rename the one with the 1. The error message is attached. It says: "Error saving the document 20075 Report: Error creating object. Could not create backup copy.

I've uninstalled, turned of the computer, rebooted, reinstalled............still same problem. I installed an old version.

This message may occur because you have not permissions to write in the target folder. I suggest as a temporary measure, which will also confirm that it is a permissions problem, that you use Save As to navigate to your desktop and there Save your modified file.

Welcome to the Forums.

I don't recall seeing this problem previously, thus I'm going to suggest a standard "fix" for sudden problems, namely resetting the User Profile, as described here

Contrary to popular belief, uninstalling/reinstalling OpenOffice will not reset the User Profile.

Also worth turning on View Hidden files, and with OpenOffice closed check if tere is a lock file in the target folder. If so, delete it.

Is the target folder on a HDD/SSD, or is it on a DVD RW?

This error will occur if Tools > Options > Load/Save > General > "Always create backup copy" is enabled and AOO can't find the "backup" folder at the path in Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Paths > Backups. Select the "Backups" path in Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Paths and click "Edit". If you get a "does not exist" error, click "OK". This should open the Select Path dialog where you can add the "backup" folder. You should then be able to save the document.
