[Solved] Windows 10 update 2004 only opens AOO in WordPad

Post by Daddyoh »

ALL my Open Office ODT files Hijacked by WordPad.

My head is spinning, I am totally confused, Open Office used to have control of all the Open Office ODT files, now since I had a Windows 10 update pushed on me yesterday to upgrade to 2004, when I try and use Open Office to make a NEW Open Office ODT file, it will do this, BUT when I go to the file (and all my other ODT files) they all open in WordPad file format.

When I open the ODT file, there appears at the top of the page a yellow warning bar saying

" WordPad does not support all of the features of this document's format. Some content might be missing or displayed improperly"

I did not alter any Open Office settings, I did NOT tell Windows 10 20004 update to do this.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Welcome to the Forums.
This is a known problem with Windows 10 updates.
Microsoft is known to reset file associations when updating.
I don't believe anyone here likes it or can do anything about it.
You can use this tutorial to reset the file associations to use OpenOffice.
OpenOffice 4.1.7, LibreOffice 7.0.1.2 on Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate & Windows 10 Home (2004)

The Windows update has changed your file associations - as appears to happen quite often with Windows updates. You can still open your documents from within Apache OpenOffice by using File | Open but the update has changed the application which will be used when you double click in the file manager or on a shortcut to your files.

Please see Default to Wordpad for solutions.

I hate this damn computer, I wish that I could sell it.
It won't do what I want it to, Only what I tell it.

THANKYOU to RUSSLEB and ROBLEYD for both of your help.
I appreceate this.

I went to the WINDOWS VISTA to get some idea where to look, because there is no Windows10 to look at
>START> CONTROL PANEL> go to Programs> DEFAULT PROGRAMS.

NOW for WINDOWS10 v2004 do this.

Go START> CONTROL PANEL> DEFAULT PROGRAMS.
A selection screen opens "Choose programs that windows uses by default"
Now select the 2nd BOX saying "Assoceiate a file type or protocol with a program. Put a tick in it.
Next a HUGE LONG list in alphabital order of file types appears, saying "Choose Default apps by file type".
Scroll down a long way until you can see the "odt"
Select "odt" OpenOfficeText to the right it should be OpenOfficeWriter.
If not click on the icon and change from what it is to OpenOfficeWriter
Save and exit

Now go and see if Open Office will open the odt file in Open Office, this worked for me, but if it dosent then I don't know what else to do.

Restart you computer to save its settings and reboot.

Hope this helps.

What sub version of the Windows happened this? 32/64 bit? Home, Professional...?

I just ask it, because our Windows10 (x64Prof) PC-s just upgraded to 2004 version in these days and it not happened the decribed thing. We are using 64 bit LibreOffice versions: 6.1.6, 6.2.8. The file associations has not changed.
Problems raised with LAN access rights only - as it happened at EVERY larger upgrades of windows 10. We had modified the LAN settings, and our PC-s work again as expected on the LAN.
