[Solved] The application “OpenOffice” can’t be opened

Post by lottaearth »

I need help with my Open Office Application. It will not open. Yesterday I made some new spreadsheets and emailed them to my husband. Received a notice on my desktop about odd behavior and potential ransomeware. Tried to recover but came back with 0 of 7 files recovered. Now I cannot open the application. Can anyone give me some guidance? Thanks!

I'm not a Mac user, so can be little help with Mac specific installation or problems. However, if you got messages about potential ransomeware, I strongly suggest that you carry out a detailed virus scan with latest virus definitions, and a malware scan - say with the application from
http://www.malwarebytes.com if they offer a Mac specific version.

Doing these won't hurt your computer.

If your Mac has been damaged by malware you will need to solve that problem first. This forum is for OpenOffice and not the place to get help with that. Apple will have instructions for reinstalling MacOS to remove malware, but you will need to ensure you have backups of your data. Apple provides several backup methods including iCloud and Time Machine. Enabling backups for important documents is always your responsibility.

Did you save the documents yesterday?
• If so, there is no need to recover anything as long as malware didn't destroy them.
• If not, consider the risk of leaving documents open in an application, with changes but unsaved, for a long period of time. You may have lost your data unless the email copy exists, either in your husband's Inbox or in your Sent Items.
Also see [Tutorial] Mac FAQ Q23/A23 and Q24/A24.

Reboot MacOS. Try to launch OpenOffice. If it does not open, review Q05/A05 and Q54/A54. If you need to, review Q04/A04 and Q03/A03. Q34/A34 will help you determine if other software on your Mac is interfering with OpenOffice. But you may not be able to resume normal operation if you have malware on your system.
