[Solved] Selection highlight color black instead of blue

Post by willgrap »

Hi all, I am having trouble searching for the answer to this question because "highlight" and "text select" are everywhere on google and forums.

I have a user whose Writer highlights text in white on black rather than the default of black text on a light blue selection field.

I cannot find any settings in the app itself that seem to apply and strongly suspect it is a windows Theme issue.
However I have played with her themes and also "Windows Color and Appearance" and her "selected items" color setting is Blue.

My last thought is to uninstall open office and reinstall and suspect it will go back to the default light blue highlight.
Has anyone run into this?
Very minor "issue" I know but I'm annoyed I can't figure it out. :)

EDIT: View > Transparency needs to be checked, opacity at 75%. Thank you all!

Are you using that archaic old version of the OpenOffice?

If the answer is "not", then please update your signature on the User Control Panel

Is the theme a high contrast theme? Did you try unchecking Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Accessibility > Automatically detect high contrast mode...?

NOTE: Signature fixed, thank you.

Bill: I did not see that setting and it's enabled by default on my own instance. I will check hers Monday.
Thank you and I will report back if that fixes it.

Her "detect high contrast" setting was checked, I unchecked it, and even restarted Write but same issue remains.
Huge variable is we are in a vmware thin client environment and there may be some group policy hoops in play.
I will continue to research, thank you all for your responses!

You may have to restart OpenOffice, not merely Write.

No success, in changing most accessibility settings/high contrast, etc. Restarted OO completely.
Perhaps we can reverse engineer this? Can anyone MAKE their Writer select text in black instead of default blue?

On my computer I am using /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /View, with Galaxy theme selected for icons. While on that page check Transparency under Selection (righthand lower on window) and change the % value to (say) 75%. I find 75% gives me a nice rendering of a medium blue. It will not be applied until you press OK and exit that window.

This Transparency setting will allow ranges between 10% and 90%; which one you choose is your decision, but I suggest starting with 75%.

After testing the Transparency setting using several different themes on Manjaro, it appears that the problem may be caused by turning off the Transparency option. With Transparency on, the selection highlight color is determined by the theme and the text color is normal. With Transparency off, the selection highlight is black and the text color is inverted.

In LibreOffice the option has been removed from the options dialog but is still accessible via Tools>Options>Advanced> [Open Expert Configuration]
Then search for "transparent" and modify
org.OpenOffice.Office.common|Drawinglayer|TransparentSelection (True/False)
org.OpenOffice.Office.common|Drawinglayer|TransparentSelectionPercent (integer number)

I prefer the inverse color selection when transparency is off.

That appears precisely to be the setting. Thank you all!
I will have her check that setting.

EDIT: That was it, fixed, thank you all.

After testing with some dark themes in Manjaro, it appears that the Transparency option can't be changed if the "Automatically detect high contrast mode of operating system" in Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Accessibility is enabled. This appears to affect only dark themes, not light themes.

Could you please post a screenshot where that "advanced" is in options? cuz I can't find it...
or what to add into my "registrymodifications.xcu" to turn the transparency on?

and even after turning off "Automatically detect high contrast mode of operating system" doesn't let me turn on Transparency setting

my text selection is always white and I have no way to change it
