[Solved] Can't delete OpenOffice from Mac OS

Post by Seattle Brian »

Okay, so I downloaded and installed OpenOffice for Mac, tried to open it, then had for force quit because it wasn't opening and freezing my screen. So I decided to delete the program for now....dragged it from Applications to Trash, then opened my library and then dragged the OpenOffice folder in Library to trash (per instructions elsewhere on this site), tried to empty trash, and keep getting a message that I'm unable because "LastResort.ttf is in use"....has anyone else had this issue? I'd appreciate any ideas.......when I Google "LastResort.ttf", all I find is "trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=3848 - 84k -.........."

Thanks in advance!

Had you installed X11 to run OOo?

I move the thread to the Mac forum. You should scan that area, there are some threads already about Mac issues.
LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7 Gigi) and 25.2 portable on Windows 11.

Open a terminal (Applications/Utilities).
Type in :

sudo rm -Rf /home/name_of_user/Trash/*

BTW, which version of OOo did you try and install and are you using Leopard or Tiger (PPC or Intel) ?

When I try that I get "input/output error". Or the command isn't recognized. I have Leopard intel, and installed version 2.3

Illegal option is usually what you get when you mistype the command, e.g. not putting a space between rm and the options -Rf, or if you just type sudo -Rf without the rm (which means remove, BTW).

I assume you've substituted name_of_user with the name of the user account ?

Thanks, Alex...yes, I did substitute my user account name, and did type the command exactly as you did (after trying it without the spaces, just to see what would happen); still no luck......brought up terminal, typed, pressed enter, got a request to enter my password to continue, did so....and nothing really happened.....

Then the command worked. If nothing is returned on the screen then the command you entered was (in theory) successful. This should have emptied your Trash. It might be worthwhile emptying the root account's Trash too. BE VERY CAREFUL TO GET THE RIGHT FOLDER and the right command, otherwise rm -RF in the root folder can cause some very serious and irreversible damage !!!

Okay, so I figured it out...the Unix command didn't work, and I wasn't comfortable going into the root folder. So first I went to Library, opened Application Support, dragged OpenOffice to trash, then while holding down the alt (or control), button, emptied trash. Away that folder went. Then restarted the computer, immediately went to Applications, dragged OpenOffice to trash, did the same (empty trash *while* holding down the alt or control button)....and it emptied.... no weird messages regarding any .ttf files...and it seems to be *gone*!!!! And I appreciate the advice; I'm just glad that I stumbled upon a solution!!!!!!
