[Solved] Blacked-out end-note numbers
Every since I downloaded the latest update of OpenOffice, the endnote numbers (as they appear in the text of the document, not at the bottom in the endnotes section) are blacked out, so I can't read the actual numbers. They still work if I click on them and everything (I have them set as Index links, not that switching them to any other format makes the numbers visible...), it's just not being able to read the numbers gets annoying.
Please help!?
I'm using Oo 3.1
Mac OS 10.5.7
Thanks.

Re: Blacked-out end-note numbers
Do they print OK?
Edit: try toggling View / Field Shadings. Or just tweak your brightness and contrast on your monitor to see if you are seeing numbers on a dark grey background.

"Field Shadings." I cannot find this anywhere. Not in the 'edit' or 'view' menus. Not in the 'Preferences,' under the general OpenOffice 'View' or OpenOffice Writer 'View.' I'm a little perplexed.RoryOF wrote:Do they print OK?

Don't actually have a printer set up at this point. Brightness/contrast does not help.
Re: Blacked-out end-note numbers
I'm using a Windows version: definitely View Menu / Field Shadings, shortcut key CTRL F8. Don't know where it might be on Mac version.
Edit: that is on the Writer menu.

Re: Blacked-out end-note numbers
Did you check the style setting of end-note?
1. F11 to show the Style and Formatting window (Or, Format - Style and Formatting)
2. Select Endnote - right click - Modify
3. Check the setting, especially the font color

If no change, can you upload a screenshot and a sample file (see here: How to attach a document here)?

Re: Blacked-out end-note numbers
Thanks for the other suggestions. Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to make it work. Here's a screen capture. The three black rectangles are endnotes.

And here's a document sample demonstrating the problem.

Howdy. I use Mac OS X 10.5.7 and OO.org 3.1 When I opened your attachment, the shading was a light gray. However, if you hit CMD (Apple) +F8 (key), it should toggle the shading off. It is also on the View > Field Shadings (right below Text boundaries).

Re: Blacked-out end-note numbers
Amazing!
Thank you! The command key worked, though oddly enough, there is no 'Field Shadings' in my 'View' menu. (I think right when I started using OO I eliminated a bunch of items from the menus I imagined I would never use, that were just 'cluttering and distracting.' Might have to rethink that considering how much trouble it cause me).
Right after discovering this, dug around in the Preferences menu and finally found what I was looking for all along -- under 'Appearance,' 'Field Shadings' was set to black (not sure how that happened). Setting it to 'automatic' brought back the light gray that I was used to, and that exegete77 was talking about. (Could of sworn I tried changing the color of every element under 'appearance' to see if it would fix anything with no luck, but whatever... ). So, for anyone else who ever has the same problem in the future, the path is
OpenOffice.org>Preferences>OpenOffice.org>Appearance>Text Document> Field Shadings.
Thanks to everyone who offered help through my numbskullery, and especially to exegete77!
