Problem using MathType with Open/StarOffice
I have (had) a document (.doc) in MS Word format with MathType 5.2 objects (equations), but after saving using StarOffice some of the equations were gone completely and others were converted to picture objects. The missing equations retained the rectangle line. Reviewing the document with StarOffice was no problem - it properly invoked the MathType editor. After I made some text changes, and saved as an MS Word document is when the problem occurred. Anyone have any insight into this problem?

Check your MathType settings on Tools>Options>Load/Save>Microsoft Office> first settings MathType........ ticked or not.

Re: Problem using MathType with Open/StarOffice
Thanks for the reply.
I selected both Load and Save, but StarOffice 8 Writer still has problems. I created a test document with many MathType equations, and using the right click on the equation object I sometimes get the correct menu choices (Edit, Open) that allow me to open the MathType editor. On other equations I don't get the same menu but the menu for a picture object. When I open with Word (2003) it all functions correctly (i.e. I can open the MathType editor for all the equations). I'm not able to determine why Writer works correctly for some equations and not others although it's consistent it's not predictable when loading other documents with embedded OLE MathType objects.
I've searched all the forums but I don't see anyone else with this problem.

Re: Problem using MathType with Open/StarOffice
I can't speak for Star 8, but OpenOffice 2.3 works like a charm. Why not download it and try it out. No need to disembowel Star 8 in the meantime; you can use both or either. Of course, you might not need all of Star 8 and OpenOffice and Word....

Re: Problem using MathType with Open/StarOffice
I downloaded OpenOffice 2.3.1 to try it. I discovered something interesting. If I right click a MathType equation after loading the document I get the proper menu (contains Open and Edit at the bottom). If I then right a different equation object it fails (no Open or Edit). However, if I click on a text portion of the document in between, then the second math object opens correctly. This explains the inconsistency I was experiencing. I must click on some other text before clicking the next math object. Although this is also not consistent. I found I might be able to right click on several math objects without failure, but if it fails then I click on some random text part then re-click the math object and it succeeds. (double left click follows the same behavior - either opens MathType or pix object).
With OOo I haven't been able to reproduce the problem where MathType objects are converted entirely to picture objects (unrecoverable), or deleted altogether, as I had with StarOffice 8. I will continue to experiment with my test document.
