Header margin

Post by gbaby »

I'm trying to set the space between a header and the top of the page to be .25 inches. It seems that OOoWriter keeps the spacing between the header and the top of the page to whatever you set as the default page margin, in my case 1 inch. Changing the spacing setting in Format -> Page -> Header keeps the space between the header and the top of the page constant, and only adjusts the distance between the header and body text. Is the only way to solve this by changing the entire page's top margin to be .25 inches and then setting the spacing between header and text to be .75? It's kind of inconvenient to have to change the whole page's margin when I have to insert a header.

As far as I can see, this is the only way.

If all your letters / docs use the same margin / header spacing distance, you could save a blank document with the margin / header spacing you want as a template and just open the template?

Hope this helps.

If you want the total space from the top of the page to the regular text to be 1" then the spacing should be closer to .5" than .75". The correct amount depends on your font and its size but .5" is about right for Times New Roman 12 because the header takes up about .25" itself.

If you need a specific spacing from the paper edge to the printed header (or footer), you may want to un-tick the "Automatic height" option for the header and set it to a specific height. That way, the exact spacing above or below the printed material is exactly predictable and won't change with the header formatting. As long as you set the header height larger than what the header formatting (font size, etc) requires, it will be fine. If the height is too small, some of the header may be clipped at the height you specified.

It is unfortunate that Writer lays out the margins in a way that is different from that used by the most common style guides, but once you get it set up, you don't have to think about it again ;-)
