Having trouble sharing files

I started a document on my laptop and I save it there and then copied it to a shared folder that is hosted on my desktop. The problem comes when I try to open this document to work on it, it said it is read-only. I set the original file to allow anyone to read and write. But I checked the file on the desktop, using my laptop, it says I can't change the permission on any level. I saved the file as a .doc.

You've left out the crucial technical details... in this case, what operating system (OS) version are you running on the laptop, specifically, and what OS on the desktop?
