[Partially Solved] Writer went crazy from inserting pics!

Post by stendoty »

Hi y'all, I am new to OOo (and linux for that matter) and I have been working on a document that is text with inserted pictures throughout. It is also formatted with tables, everything is inside the tables. I have had many problems similar to other people's I have read about on these forums, with the pictures going all over the place. Last time I inserted a picture, all the pictures in my document moved to what looked like they were on top of eachother, but they were quickly changing, so it looked like a wierd glitchy movie of my pictures. Then my text is all gone! It looks like it just disappears into oblivion somewhere "behind" the other pages. I didn't save it when this happened, and now whenever I open it, this problem exists. I am so worried that all my work is lost, can anyone help?

I am on version 2.0.3.

Thanks for any advice.

First, version 2.0.3 is rather old now. What distribution are you using? If a debian based one, see that thread: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.

For the pics issue, personally, I only trust the anchoring As character (and not To character).

Hm, well I have Redhat. I downloaded the latest ver. of OOo, but in googling how to install, it said I needed to log on as root, well I can't do that, so I am not sure how to update my Writer. That aside, has anyone encountered this problem and fixed it? Or do you think that updating to the newest version will fix it? I can't see how it would, but I don't know.

Why can't you log as root? Is it your machine or not?

Have you tried to change the anchoring of the pics?

Oh, I am at work, so no, it's not really my computer.

Yes, I have tried the anchoring, that might have saved this from happening I suppose, but I didn't know it at the time, and now I just want to know where all the rest of my document went. You know how there is a cursor when you type, well when I put my cursor at the bottom of one of the pages, where all my text is missing and the pictures are all jumbled on top of each other, and I can use the down arrow to put the cursor all the way down past the margin and off the page into the gray area, if that makes sense, and I can't see my text anymore... does this make any sense at all?

Yes, switch to View>Web layout. You should see your text now.
It may have been put in a section. If so, open the Navigator (F5), right click>Edit on a section in the section tree and remove them. It should keep the text in your document.

OK! I see my text in web layout. However, in Navigator there is nothing under sections. So I don't think that is it?

Hmm, don't see what it could be (but brain running slowly now, time to go to bed). Just by curiosity, can you upload a sample here (if smaller than 128 kb, else, use a file sharing web site like mediafire.com)? If there is any sensitive data, replace it by dummy text.

At least you've recovered your text.

Actually, the whole thing is sensitive so I can't. But, at least I have my text now, and I will just redo it I suppose, working from that. So thank you for that tip, it did save me from having to start all the way over. Cheers
