Why OO 2.2.0 reads htm file, but OO 2.3.1 crashes?
Why OO 2.2.0 reads htm file, but OO 2.3.1 crashes?
Hi all,
I am new to this forum. Though Ihave used OO over the years on and off, this is my first attempt to use it regularly on my PC, WinXP Home SP2.
Before I detail my problem with OO 2.3.1, I'll first describe that this not a problem at all for OO 2.2.0.
* I open MS Explorer, right klick on any HTM file, say file1.htm, and choose the menu option "open with OpenOffice.org 2.2"
* OO Writer/Web then opens this file as a HTML file, i.e., I then have the menu option "View" > "HTML Source". The page has the look of a webfile. Great! I can change the HTML source ad libitum.
Now the bad part, this is what OO 2.3.1 (OOo_2.3.1_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe) does:
* I open MS Explorer, right klick on file1.htm, and choose the menu option "open with OpenOffice.org 2.3"
* OO Writer then opens this file as a text file, i.e., the layout is that of a textfile, and I do not have the menu option "View" > "HTML Source". I can do "View" > "Weblayout", but... then OO 2.3.1 crashes. This happens with any HTML file I tried... ove and over.
After this bad experiences, I deinstalled OO 2.3.1, and reinstalled OO 2.2.0. Result: no problem whatsoever!
What could be wrong with OO 2.3.1? Anybody had the same experience?
Thank you,
oocub

Re: Why OO 2.2.0 reads htm file, but OO 2.3.1 crashes?
I don't notice any problem with opening HTML files in 2.3.1.
Can you post a sample file that's giving you trouble?

I ca reproduce that with OOo 2.3.1 under Linux. Don't know if it was the same before. But opening the file from OOo (already loaded) works fine.
LibreOffice 25.2 on Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7 Gigi) and 25.2 portable on Windows 11.

That's the problem! Why can OOo 2.2.0 do it, and OOo 2.3.1 can't??? Seems to be a downgrade from 2.2.0 to 2.3.1.Hagar de l'Est wrote:I ca reproduce that with OOo 2.3.1 under Linux. Don't know if it was the same before. But opening the file from OOo (already loaded) works fine.
Shall I report this as a bug?

Weird. I tried to Open with... OpenOffice.org2.3 on my Linux box and this time, it works fine.
BTW, there was already a bug about that but it had been closed: Issue 76391 - Windows File Explorer Open with menu can't open Writer/Web on html file.

Re: Why OO 2.2.0 reads htm file, but OO 2.3.1 crashes?
I don't see any crash, but opening the document using "Open With... Word Processor" from the file manager (Gnome/Nautilus) forces the document to open in Writer and not Writer/Web. When it opens in Writer, most of the document is missing.
Nautilus seems to use the command "ooffice -writer filename" to open the file. If I use instead only "ooffice filename", then it opens in Writer/Web and it seems fine at that point.
Using File > Open from within OOo allows OOo to choose for itself which application to use, and Writer/Web is ok.
Still, it is certainly a bug that Writer crashes or loses part of the document.

Re: Why OO 2.2.0 reads htm file, but OO 2.3.1 crashes?
Thank you, acknak and Hagar de l'Est! I think, I will stick with 2.2.0 for the time being because it does what I want to, and 2.3.1 does not.
Even worse is the following, that MS Word and Editor do fine, but both OOo 2.2.0 and OOo 2.3.1 don't:
in WinXP Home, both OOo versions cannot load the file le17_01.htm (see attachment), i.e., when I try to open, either from the context menu or from writer/web, it is loading and loading... the hour glass is working forever, nothing else happens. With MS Word or Editor it is a snap!
Is this also a bug?
Thank you,
oocub

Right, I had to kill OOo too on my Linux box.

Since you have a reproducible problem (which is a regression over a previous OOo version), across platforms, with a good problem document, I would encourage you to file a bug report.

Same for me. On a side note, I don't think the html is good xhtml. You don't close your <br> tags, for instance (should be <br />). Apart from that kind of thing, which is hidden for the visitor anyway, it looks very good.

I filed the first problem, see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=85618acknak wrote:Since you have a reproducible problem (which is a regression over a previous OOo version), across platforms, with a good problem document, I would encourage you to file a bug report.
