Hi,
please, could anyone try this:
1. create a 2 x 2 table
2. mark the first column
3. format the first column wiht "numbering" that you see "1.", "2." in the left cells.
4. go to cell [1,2] - the right upper
5. split it horizontally
6. "2." changes to "3." - that's not so nice!
Thanks in advance.

Re: Curios Problem with numbering and table-cell-splitting
I get the same behaviour on OOo2.3.0 running in Linux. I poked around in the submitted bugs... I didn't find anything similar though.
The same happens if you split the cells first, and then apply Numbering to the whole column. If you select the first cell and apply Numbering, and then do the same to the second cell, the numbering works correctly.
Looks like a bug to me...

Re: Curios Problem with numbering and table-cell-splitting
Same for me (under Linux).
I've noticed a quick workaround: merge the cell(s) that has/have been split and undo, the numbering gets correct.
You should file a bug report Norbert, this one seems not so complicated, therefore, it should be fixed rather quickly. You'll be one of the many contributors who have participated in improving OOo
