Files don't open

Post by rolandje »

Hi,

I use multiple PC's with OOo and I've shared my docs in a network for all PC's on a central, external hard disk. But... when I try to open OOo-docs from the external HD, I only see the Writer startupscreen for a few moments and then the whole program is gone..

I don't have this problem by opening local files... It's possible to open the files in an opened Writer, but saving is impossible: I get an import-export error..

Any ideas for fixing this problem?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

To help you, we need some more general information:
  • Which version of OpenOffice do you use?
  • What operating system do you use?
  • What if you try to open the files on the PC where the external hard disk is connected to?

I'm sorry, but these two statements seem to contradict each other. Can you explain in more detail what exactly you are doing and what exactly doesn't work?

Thnx for your message.

I use the Dutch version of Open Office 2.3.1 on a Windows Vista Home Premium PC.
It is only possible to open the files on the PC (a Windows XP Home) where the external HD is connected to.
I've tried the same from a Vista to a Vista, but that gives the same problem.
I've also tried it with another external HD, but that gives also the same problem..

Opening the files doens't work in Windows Explorer, but does work in an opened program.
But... saving the files is impossible...

Not at all. See that thread: open with double clickking. Same issue.

Try to map the drive.

I cannot reproduce this behavior with clients under Win XP Pro. I can open OOo files in Windows explorer by double-clicking without problems even on network shares that are not mapped.
Is this known to occur under Vista only?

Well, in this thread it is not mentioned that also saving the file doesn't work.

@rolandje:
Does saving not work at all? What about trying to save using "Save as"?

I was just addressing the open process that fails from the browser but not from the OOo interface.

Perhaps a rights issue again under Vista? Could the OOo instance be denied the access to the drive?
Have you tried to run OOo as administrator to check if you can reproduce that?
